shopping with a conscience

I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. ~Edward Everett Hale

I recently read the book by Jen Hatmaker called 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess. I wrote a complete review of this book on the Home Educating Family Review site. Highly recommended!

I guess I always thought I was somewhat responsible, a good steward. But..there is always more we can do. One thing that struck me is that I need to try harder to support local businesses, and companies that engage in "fair trade." I was frankly surprised by the number of companies that are working hard to support jobs for women coming out of human trafficking, those that support veterans, those who pride themselves on using materials and workers from the U.S.A, or who give their profits to charity or support research for breast cancer and other diseases. They often use organic, environmentally friendly materials. You can find accessories, apparel, shoes, items for the home...really, almost anything!

It is easier, now more than ever, to put our money where our mouth is. Here are just a few companies I've come across:

Global Girlfriend

Fair Indigo

Be the Joy

Trade as One

All American Clothing

It's a start. Let me know any "companies with a conscience" that you support!
